Backgammon playing etiquette

Well, I knew you had to be polite to the winner and you are allowed to be a little condescending to the loser but there also happens to be etiquette to playing the game of backgammon. The backgammon code of ethics is needed to make people realize that there are certain processes that are considered polite and normal after every game. For example, you can start with the following:

  • Always greet your opponent match and initiate a conversation before you play a game.
  • Wish the opposing player when you finish the game. There is no need for saying “good match” if the game was not good but if you are the loser; congratulate the winner and then wish him or her, a reasonable goodbye.
  • If you are doubling the cube, place the cube in the center of the board and then say “double.” If you are going to take it, pick up the cube and say “take” If you are going to drop, place the cube in the proper place and then say “drop” or “pass.”
  • Both parties have to keep score and they should announce the score and acknowledge the opposing partners stated score before proceeding with the match.
  • You have to shake the dice three times before you throw the dice. Do not throw until your opponent has completed his game and play.
  • Do not reach for the doubling cube unless you mean to use it. This is a form of cheating as you are making your partner uncomfortable and thinking about potentially blocking moves.
  • If you wish to copy a position or play in the middle of the game, make sure that you ask permission from the opposing player. Do it quickly and try not to repeat it too often.
  • Do not congratulate your partner on every roll of the dice as its another way of telling him that the game is based on luck and not expertise.

Many people don’t really realize that these above mentioned moves are polite and considerate towards the opposing player. Tournament directors can remind players of these moves but do keep updated on these just in case.
