Luck or Skill: in Backgammon
Backgammon is a poplar game with thousands of players and fans world wide. But with so many online sites opening up, players wonder about how the winners actually win! Is it luck or skill that makes one player the winner and all the remaining the losers?
But when you actually compare games, you will notice that games like Chess and Reversi are all skill based games. They require a huge amount of training and knowledge to play the game and you can immediately see the difference when the games are played. Luck does not have much of an influence on games of skill that are always played according to set strategies and methods. With backgammon, that is not a problem as luck is combined with skill. Even a poor player can also win if luck favors him and his game.
Let’s just see how it works-Backgammon is played with a 2* 12 square board of alternating colors. The game entails moving and displacing pieces all over the board as values are ruled by the roll of a dice. Most games are run on the same principle but backgammon is complicated by the presence of dice that adds confusion and luck to the game. But previously, the game was considered to be a from of gambling
Way back in 1982, Ted Barr a famous writer and tournament player was accused of cheating when he hosted several tournaments of the game. The accusation was that backgammon was purely a game of luck and could also be classified as a form of gambling where players bet on the outcome of the dice. But after a careful review, several independent judges came to the decision that just luck was not enough. Anticipating the roll of the dice and taking the numbers that come into consideration for future plays was not up to luck. There was a large amount of skill involved and the judges exonerated the player Ted Barr completely. After that ruling, backgammon was established to be a game where skill and luck both combined to make a winner.
The fact was further established when probability factors were calculated into the mix of throwing the dice. When two dice are thrown, there is a probability of 36 different combinations that can come up. If the exact throw of each dice can be calculated by an alert individual then each throw of the dice and its probability can be anticipated and future plays can be decided. Along with the throw of the dice, strategy is decided to make the throw and the game successful.
