- If you know the backgammon doubling cube then you will always realize that doubling can literally win you the game. When your opponent doubles the cube, you will have to accept it or lose the game. When you accept the cube, you then regain control over the cube. It’s always good to redouble the game too as you might just end up winning the game. You can redouble to four too anytime that its time to roll.
- Always double when it does not cost you anything. There is absolutely no reason to double on your first throw itself as you can get quite ahead and it’s much better to lose the game with a little advantage.
- Try to learn match equity tables as you can carry out match doubling and other decisions based on these tables.
- If you are slow during the game you should not try to lose points that are strategic as you will end up losing your unique chance of winning.
- Early in the game try to avoid placing your checkers on low points as it will restrict your options later on in the game. Try not to place checkers on the 1- and 2- points too early.
- Is you are bearing off, you can take all the checkers that you want with the dice and about 99.9% of the time this is far better that trying to spread out your distribution.
- Always plan your moves in the future as you should not make a move unless you have atleast two or three viable alternatives. Take as much time as possible is available for you to play the game.
- Learn how to count your pips as this is the best way to bring your checkers home and bar them off. You can start by using pip count formulas that will help you make the correct decisions.
- There are only fifteen possible opening rolls in a backgammon game and you will find at least one superior opening move that you can be comfortable with. Practice this one well and stick to it but try others as well so that you can combine moves.
- Be careful to extend into busy corners as you will land up with multiples of six.
